It's Halloween, and ten timid ghosts in a haunted
house have a problem: a mean witch has moved in
and is planning to scare them out, one by one!
Young trick-or-treaters learn to count down from
ten to one as each ghost flees from the witch's
silly costumes and homemade props. When the homeless
ghosts gather in the woods, their fear turns to
determination and they plot to get their house
back. Will the ghosts frighten the witch away
in time for Halloween night?

I had always wanted to create a Halloween
book, as well as a "bully" book, in which
the "bullied" characters rise up and are victorious
in the end. One October morning while driving
my kids to school, these ideas converged and
Ten Timid Ghosts was
born. Bethany and Brendan had been excitedly
talking about Halloween costumes. I began
jotting down as many Halloween characters
and objects as I could think of. By the time
I arrived home, I was thinking about a group
of ghosts in a haunted house and a witch that
moved in and wanted them out. If I had 10
ghosts, the book could be a counting book
as well. And if the witch scared them out
of the house one by one, it could count down
from 10 to 1, a more unusual twist on counting.

Young children connect with
this book because of their fascination with
the Halloween mix of fun and fright. Children
identify with the ghosts and quickly see the
funny old witch behind the scary tricks -
they're in on the 'secret' from the beginning.
A surprise appears on each two-page spread
where a scary object or action takes place
in a different part of the house, enhancing
the visual variety throughout. I loved designing
and decorating each room, and actually built
a three dimensional cardboard model of the
house to help with the overall design and
sketches.

A child can experience the
book by counting the ghosts in each spread
and matching the number. The rhythmic text
is especially engaging for emergent readers.
Many 'pre reading' children memorize the book
and enjoy showing others how they can 'read'
it. |

Reviews
and Comments
“....For young kids who crave just
a little scare, this book will be a good choice
and great fun for Halloween.”
-Marilyn Courtot, Children’s Literature
"Ten Timid
Ghosts by Jennifer O'Connell has got to be
one of the greatest books to read to kids around
Halloween time. I recently read this to my daughter
and some of her friends. They all laughed at the
goofy disguises that the witch wears to scare the
ghosts.
....I think it is great that this book counts backwards
from ten. It is always useful to teach something
in books like this. Yet what I truly appreciate
about Ten Timid Ghosts is
the good story. Reading is so crucial for kids.
It takes a truly gifted artist to absorb them in
a story. I commend Mrs. O'Connell for doing just
that here.
If you want a great book to read to younger kids
this Halloween, you need look no further than Ten
Timid Ghosts. I recommend this book."

“I chose this book to use in a
math workshop for kindergarten and first grade teachers.
Teachers enjoyed the book and were excited about
using it in their classrooms. It is a great resource
to use during the month of October to help students
recognize numbers and work with number combinations.
Not only did the teachers love the book, but my
four year old son also loved the book. Despite the
fact that Halloween is long over, he still insists
on reading it all the time. He loves the illustrations
and the story line. It is a wonderful book with
clever and predictable word patterns that also encourages
young children to practice recognizing their numbers.”

“We just got this book and it is
excellent. My 3 year old loves it. She is “reading”
it to herself already. We love looking for the ghosts
on every page and the story is really cute.
...this is a fun, fun, fun book, we were laughing
out loud.”

“....Each
page is filled with so much happening and
wonderful details that keep us finding new
things each time we read the book.
....I love that this book made enough of an
impression that they [the children] are requesting
it several times a day and they are remembering
what they are hearing too! This is a wonderful
Halloween book and I’m glad that I’ve added
it to our bookshelf. I think that children
as young as two and up to around six would
enjoy this book, year after year.”
-Parent, Epinions.com
“This is a fun, funny counting
book perfect for the Halloween season. It’s
one of those books that both my six and two
year old just loved from the very first read.”
